World Mobile has launched an ambitious drone-based, decentralized telecom project that leverages blockchain technology and aerial drones to deliver wireless connectivity worldwide. This cutting-edge initiative aims to bridge the gaps left by traditional communication infrastructure, especially in remote and underserved regions.

The project utilizes hydrogen-powered drones flying at 60,000 feet in the stratosphere, providing coverage of up to 15,000 square kilometers per aircraft with 450 guidable beams.

Charles Barnett, the chief business officer of World Mobile Group, highlighted that this aerial network offers “6ms of total latency,” making it faster than satellite systems.

This approach is designed to deliver internet service up to 18 times cheaper per gigabyte compared to space-based infrastructure, targeting the growing sky-based telecommunications market projected to reach $159 billion by 2030.

Decentralized Infrastructure and Market Goals

World Mobile has already established a ground-based decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePin), combining traditional telecom assets with independent providers to extend coverage into dead zones.

The company's goal is to capture a slice of the sky-based telecom sector, valued at approximately $98.3 billion, which includes satellite and aerial platforms.

Technical and Regulatory Challenges

Deploying stratospheric drones involves significant technical hurdles, such as ensuring each hydrogen-powered drone can stay airborne for nine days while remaining lightweight for fuel efficiency.

Barnett explained that these drones must withstand weather conditions and cosmic radiation while managing heat from solar exposure.

Regulatory compliance also presents challenges, including securing permits from agencies like FAA and EASA for UAV operations at high altitudes.

Competition in the Decentralized and Satellite Markets

World Mobile faces competition from decentralized wireless networks like Helium Mobile, which partners with telecom giants such as AT&T to extend coverage into dead zones.

Additionally, space-based projects like Elon Musk’s Starlink aim to dominate global internet connectivity via satellite constellations.
