Global Renewable Energy Costs Decline Significantly, Says UN

Date Published

The latest reports from the United Nations indicate that the world has reached a crucial turning point in renewable energy adoption. Solar and wind power are becoming increasingly cost-effective, paving the way for a sustainable future.

Positive Tipping Point in Renewable Energy

According to the UN, last year saw an impressive 74 percent of global electricity growth come from renewable sources like wind and solar. The report titled

Seizing the Moment of Opportunity

highlights that 92.5 percent of new electricity capacity added in 2024 was derived from renewables.

The Cost of Energy Shift

Notably, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) confirms that onshore wind, solar panels, and new hydropower are now the three most affordable electricity sources worldwide. Solar power is currently 41 percent cheaper, while wind power is 53 percent cheaper than the least expensive fossil fuel options. “The fossil fuel age is flailing and failing,” stated UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during his speech at UN headquarters in New York City.

Guterres emphasized that we are witnessing

the dawn of a new energy era,

where affordable and clean energy will drive economic opportunities globally.

Investment Trends in Renewables

Investment in green energy surged to $2 trillion last year, surpassing fossil fuel investments by about $800 billion. Despite this growth, fossil fuels continue to receive significantly higher government subsidies, amounting to $620 billion compared to only $70 billion for renewables in 2023. This disparity highlights a pressing need for policy shifts to support sustainable energy solutions.

Challenges Ahead for Renewable Adoption

Despite the positive developments, the UN warns that the transition to renewable energy is not progressing quickly enough. Global demand for power is still rising due to various factors including population growth and increased reliance on technologies such as artificial intelligence data centers. Guterres cautioned nations dependent on fossil fuels that they risk economic decline rather than prosperity by clinging to outdated energy sources. He stated, “Countries that cling to fossil fuels are not protecting their economies. They [are] sabotaging them.”

The Global Shift Towards Renewables

The momentum in renewable energy growth is particularly evident in countries like China, where substantial portions of their economy are now tied to green energy initiatives. The reports make it clear that while renewable sources are on the rise, there remains an urgent need for accelerated action to fully realize their potential. The declining costs of renewable energy present an opportunity for economic transformation and environmental sustainability worldwide.
